Abusive Driver Fees

Governor Kaine signed SB1 and HB143. Both bills repeal the abusive driver fees and return any fees paid to date.  The release can be read here.

The abusive driver fees, which were part of House Bill 3202 passed during the 2007 General Assembly session, were intended to raise revenue for highway maintenance and improve the safety of Virginia highways.

Abusive driver fees paid by individuals to any court will be returned to those individuals by the Department of Accounts.   All outstanding fees due to the courts and the Department of Motor Vehicles will be waived and considered satisfied.  For additional information regarding the return of abusive driver fees paid, call (804) 225-2376.
Outstanding court costs and fines must still be paid.

DMV will contact individuals whose privilege to drive was suspended solely for failure to pay an abusive driver fee to notify them that they are eligible for re-instatement.  DMV will waive all re-instatement fees for these individuals. For additional information regarding license re-instatement, call DMV Direct at 866-368-5463.
